13 Books to Get You in the Halloween Spirit

Halloween is a time for all things spooky, creepy, magical, mysterious, and haunted. ???? And because no holiday season should pass without a list of similarly themed books to keep you company, we put together a list of our favorite Halloween-y books to keep you up late into the night…

1. The Wicker King by K. Ancrum
August is a misfit with a pyro streak and Jack is a golden boy on the varsity rugby team—but their friendship goes way back. An intense story about a relationship fraught with tension, madness, and love, The Wicker King is the perfect psychological thriller.

2. The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo
Inspired by myth, fairy tale, and folklore, The Language of Thorns is a deliciously atmospheric collection of short stories filled with darkness, betrayals, revenge, and love. Plus, the lush and haunting illustrations will really put you in the spooky spirit.

3. Berserker by Emmy Laybourne
Hanne’s brother, Stieg, swears their powers are a gift from the old gods, but Hanne knows she is truly cursed—especially since her gift causes her to fly into a killing state when someone she loves is threatened. This Norse Mythology AND American Western-inspired tale is sure to thrill.

4. Thornhill by Pam Smy
An abandoned orphanage, a creepy garden, and a mysterious girl—can Ella unravel the mystery of the Thornhill Institute’s shadowy past?

5. The Midnight Dance by Nikki Katz
Penny has only ever known a life at the Grande Teatro, a mysterious ballet finishing school, overseen by the young Master who keeps his students hidden from prying eyes. But when new memories appear showing a life very different from the one she thought she'd been leading, Penny begins to question the Grand Teatro and the motivations of the Master…

6. The Innocence Treatment by Ari Goelman
Lauren has a disorder that makes her believe everything her friends tell her—and she believes everyone is her friend. Her innocence puts her at constant risk, so when she gets the opportunity to have an operation to correct her condition, she seizes it. But after the surgery, Lauren is changed. Is she a paranoid lunatic with violent tendencies? Or a clear-eyed observer of the world who does what needs to be done?

7. The Wood by Chelsea Bobulski
Winter didn't ask to be the guardian of the wood—a dark, sinister forest full of lost time travelers located behind her house—but when her dad inexplicably vanishes, she's the one who must protect travelers who accidentally slip through the wood's portals. Seriously, heavy emphasis on "dark" and "sinister" with this one.

8. Spill Zone by Scott Westerfeld and Alex Puvilland
Nobody’s ever really explained the Spill but whatever it was, no one’s allowed in the Spill Zone these days except government scientists and hazmat teams. But a few intrepid explorers know how to sneak through the patrols and steer clear of the dangers inside the Zone. Scary talking dolls, a town mutated by a mysterious event, and terrifying twists will definitely scare you this Halloween.

9. Teen Hyde by Chandler Baker
Cassidy Hyde is NOT having a good year. That's where Sunshine comes in. This new experimental drug makes Cassidy feel like everything is good and she's the golden girl once again. A little memory loss feels like a small price to pay to get her life back. And the fact that boys are once again going missing has NOTHING to do with anything! Right? Teen Hyde is the horrifying, old fashion scary novel you’ve been waiting for.

10. Finding You by Lydia Albano
Isla is kidnapped from a train platform in broad daylight and thrust into a nightmare when she is sold to a sadistic aristocrat. Sounds like the beginning of a terrifying horror movie to us…

11. Beautiful Broken Girls by Kim Savage
After two teenage sisters, Mira and Francesca, drown themselves in a neighborhood quarry, their next-door neighbor Ben receives post-mortem letters from Mira. As Ben uncovers each note, he starts to unravel the hidden lies and secrets that these girls kept—lies and secrets that led to their deaths.

12. Count All Her Bones by April Henry
April Henry is an author synonymous with creepy thrillers that’ll haunt you long after they’re over. And since Count All Her Bones is the sequel to Girl, Stolen, a book about kidnap for ransom, we’re pretty sure something dark is waiting for us in this one.

13. Last Seen Leaving by Caleb Roehrig
Flynn's girlfriend, January, is missing. The cops are asking questions he can't answer, and her friends are telling stories that don't add up. All eyes are on Flynn—as January's boyfriend, he must know something… but what if the truth about what happened to January reveals a truth about himself he’d rather keep hidden? Last Seen Leaving will leave you reading (and guessing!) late into the night.
