Books to Buy for Your Friend Who’s Obsessed With TikTok
Do you/your friends spend all day scrolling through BookTok, looking for your next favorite read? Don't worry, we're not judging, that's exactly what we do with pretty much all of our free time that isn't dedicated to reading. But if you're looking to save some time, we have a cheat sheet for you. The nine books listed below are perfect for every TikTok-obsessed reader. Little Thieves by Margaret Owen Margaret Owen, author of The Merciful Crow series, crafts a delightfully irreverent retelling of “The Goose Girl” about stolen lives, thorny truths, and the wicked girls at the heart of both. Why you'll love it: stunning world building, brilliant and rich fantasy, full of witty humor, and it's got illustrators created by the author herself! Truly a gorgeous book everyone will envy, Little Thieves makes for the perfect gift this holiday season.     Blade of Secrets by Tricia Levenseller Mary E. Pearson (author of BookTok fave, Dance of Thieves) says it better than we ever could: “Loaded with action, betrayal, slow-burn romance—honestly, that is the best first kiss scene ever—I couldn’t put it down. I fell in love with Ziva, her sister, and their very “interesting” companions. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and gasp.” And if that was enough to convince you to read this one ASAP, Blade of Secrets is written by the author of Daughter of the Pirate King, one of our favorite BookTok books.   Lakesedge by Lyndall Clipstone Debut author Lyndall Clipstone's lush, gothic fantasy is about monsters and magic, set on the banks of a cursed lake. Perfect for fans of Naomi Novik, Brigid Kemmerer, and BookTok, of course. Okay, that might sound presumptuous, but seriously, the romance in this book is to die for and the aesthetic is just *chef's kiss*. Trust us, your friends will thank you.       Gilded by Marissa Meyer Listen, we could go on and on about how Marissa Meyer is the queen of fairytale retellings and no one brings the swoons like she does and when it comes to REALLY GOING THERE she's absolutely unmatched, but, just in case you're not inclined to believe us, here's what the New York Times has to say about Gilded: "When it comes to reimagined fairy tales, the reigning queen of the genre is Marissa Meyer... This dark, enchanting book is Meyer at the height of her powers—crafting a new tale with an old-school feel where nobody is guaranteed a happily-ever after. It is fresh and utterly engrossing while also familiar—just what Meyer does best." Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu It's not that we want to have to start a revolution, but if we have, there's a good chance we'd use Moxie as a guidebook. Bonus: there's also a movie on Netflix that we might watch a few (dozen) times while we're working on our plans to take down the patriarchy. Finally, if Amy Poehler is to be believed, "Moxie is sweet, funny, and fierce." And that's pretty much everything we want from our BookTok books/holiday gifts.     She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen A queer romcom featuring forced proximity, fake dating, AND enemies-to-lovers? How could we possibly be so blessed, so lucky??? Kelly Quindlen really said you can have it all and we have never been happier. Do us a favor and pick up copies of this one for ALL of your friends, no matter what social media platform they use the most.       Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé Gossip Girl meets Get Out in Ace of Spades, a YA contemporary thriller by debut author Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé about two students, Devon & Chiamaka, and their struggles against an anonymous bully. With heart-pounding suspense and relevant social commentary comes a high-octane thriller you truly won't want to miss (and won't be able to shut up about once you're finished reading)!       Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi Tomi Adeyemi’s West African-inspired fantasy debut, and instant #1 New York Times Bestseller, conjures a world of magic and danger, perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo and Sabaa Tahir—two authors we know everyone on BookTok already loves, so why wouldn't you also want to read Children of Blood and Bone?         Gearbreakers by Zoe Hana Mikuta If you spend as much time scrolling on TikTok as we do, you might have run into Zoe Hana Mikuta's account, which is a must-follow (the same way Gearbreakers is a must-read). But if you'd rather hear what the book's about, we've got you covered: Two girls on opposite sides of a war discover they're fighting for a common purpose—and falling for each other—in Zoe Hana Mikuta's high-octane debut Gearbreakers, perfect for fans of Pacific Rim, Pierce Brown's Red Rising Saga, and Marie Lu's Legend series.
