An Interview with Taran Matharu, Author of The Outcast

The Outcast is here! ???? To celebrate the release of this highly anticipated prequel to the Summon Series, we’ve asked Taran Matharu to answer some questions about his latest book.

What makes Arcturus Fierce?

Arcturus is surrounded by enemies and finds himself in the center of a conspiracy that might tear his country apart. Outnumbered and outgunned, he could easily join the rebellion and betray his friends. But instead, he fights back.

If you could give Arcturus one piece of advice, what would it be?

Arcturus often puts the needs of others before his own. Sometimes, I think he should look after himself better, especially when he has so little to begin with.

What's the strangest thing you learned while researching The Outcast?

I learned a great deal about how Vikings fought in the shield wall formation. It's a fascinating fighting style that I'd like to include more of in future books.

If you'd met Arcturus when you were a teen, would you have been friends?

I like to think so! Arcturus is a lonely soul and I think he'd befriend anyone who showed him some compassion, sometimes to a fault.

What's one fun fact most people don't know about you?

I once saved my sister from a rampaging hippo in Kenya.

What's your favorite part of being an author?

Being able to do my job from anywhere in the world. As long as I have my laptop with me, I could write my books on a beach in Thailand.

What's the most challenging part of being an author?

The solitude. I work from home, so I don't have work colleagues to speak to throughout the day. It's something a lot of authors struggle with and it's important not to become a hermit!

Which 3 fictional characters would be on your apocalypse squad?

Jason Bourne, Mad Max, Mark Watney (from The Martian)

Describe your book in 3 words

I'm going to cheat a little here and use three things instead. Harry Potter + Lord of the Rings + Pokémon.

Rebellious intent simmers among the masses, and it will not be long before it boils over. Arcturus must choose a side.. or watch an Empire crumble.
