Check it out here. Can’t get enough of Moxie? Check out this exclusive Q&A with author Jennifer Mathieu where she shares her inspiration for the book and experience working with Amy Poehler on the film adaptation. In Moxie, an unlikely teenager starts a feminist revolution at a small-town Texas high school. Was Vivian’s story inspired by your own high school experience? In some ways, yes. I always say everything that happens in Moxie either happened to me in high school, happened to a friend in high school, or it’s behavior I’ve observed in my sixteen years as a teacher. My own high school was incredibly conservative, and as anyone who has read the dedication of the novel knows, I had a teacher who called me a feminazi because I chose to voice my opinion about certain social issues of the time. Later on, I learned I wasn’t the only one who got called that awful name. If only we’d known we could have united and fought back against that sort of awful treatment. Fortunately, in college, I began to learn more about feminism and Riot Grrrl, and my life changed for the better. The movie adaptation of Moxie is now available as a Netflix original film, directed by Amy Poehler. What was it like working with Amy? Well, first of all, I was a huge fan before this happened, so it was sincerely a dream come true. When I spoke to her on the phone, I was so nervous I was breaking out in hives. But she was so down-to-earth and lovely, I relaxed quickly. As we spoke about why she wanted to adapt the novel, it made me so happy that she understood the loving, realistic relationship I was trying to portray between Vivian and her mom; I’m so proud of that aspect of the novel. When I met her on set, I was nervous again, but she was so warm and funny. I immediately asked her for a photograph even though I was going to be on set all day. It was like I was afraid if I didn’t do it then, I’d never get one! It was terrific to watch her direct and connect with the cast; she was so encouraging. This is such an English teacher thing to say, but something I really like about her is that she’s clearly a big reader and we chatted a bit about books while I was on set. She is a super cool person. What do you hope readers of the book and viewers of the movie take away from Moxie? I would say that I hope that girls realize that their voices matter and that there is joy and friendship to be found when you live your life as a feminist. I would also say that I hope boys understand that fighting for gender equality means fighting for a world where boys can be their true selves, too. A world where they can cry, show emotions, and not worry about being defined as not “man” enough because of some silly stereotypes. I think something else that I’d like readers and viewers to learn is that generations have a lot we can learn from each other. I’ve said before that writing Moxie was a little like having my older self (in the form of Vivian’s mom) talking to my younger self in the form of Vivian! I think it’s so easy for older people to think they’ve seen it all or they have all the answers, and I think it’s also easy for younger people to think that the older generations have nothing worthwhile to share. But I think we really can learn from each other and we’re stronger when we do. If you haven’t ready Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu yet 1. WHAT! 2. WHY?! 3. Pick up a copy and start reading right now! Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu An unlikely teenager starts a feminist revolution at a small-town Texas high school in this novel from Jennifer Mathieu, author of The Truth About Alice. MOXIE GIRLS FIGHT BACK! Vivian Carter is fed up. Fed up with an administration at her high school that thinks the football team can do no wrong. Fed up with sexist dress codes, hallway harassment, and gross comments from guys during class. But most of all, Viv Carter is fed up with always following the rules. Viv's mom was a tough-as-nails, punk rock Riot Grrrl in the '90s, and now Viv takes a page from her mother's past and creates a feminist zine that she distributes anonymously to her classmates. She's just blowing off steam, but other girls respond. As Viv forges friendships with other young women across the divides of cliques and popularity rankings, she realizes that what she has started is nothing short of a girl revolution.
