FLASHFALL and FLASHTIDE Favorites with Author Jenny Moyer
Favorite Character from FLASHTIDE:
It’s a close call between Orion and Dram. I love Dram’s empathy for others, his loyalty, his strength, and the depth of his love for Orion. But he goes to some dark places in this book, and Orion’s ability to love him when he’s at his absolute worst, makes her my favorite. There is something really amazing about a person who can look past someone’s brokenness, and see who they are beneath all the hurt and pain.
Favorite lines from FLASHFALL:
"I imagine I am like that glass—a bit of dust, altered by fire. But I am not fragile. If I were, the cordons would already have broken me." "Maybe I’m not like glass, after all. Maybe I’m the point of an axe, strong enough to shatter cirium."
Favorite lines from FLASHTIDE:
"The darkest places aren’t down tunnels, or in cordons absent of moonlight and stars. They’re inside us." "But then so is the light." "My decision sparks inside me, a glimmer that grows as the pod skims above the track toward Outpost Five." "I’m not going to leave Dram in the dark." "I refuse to leave any of them to the dark."
Favorite scenes to write:
I most enjoyed writing the moments of conflict between Orion and Dram. I like putting characters in a crucible and seeing them come through it stronger than they were before. In FLASHFALL, I bring Orion and Dram right up to edge of what they can handle, and in FLASHTIDE, I push them over it.
Favorite part of being an author:
Connecting with fans. When readers share a post, or reach out to me through Instagram or Twitter, telling me how much they love Orion and Dram, it is the BEST THING EVER. Knowing that my stories resonate with people or that my characters moved them or gave them FEELS is the absolute best!
Favorite author moments:
Getting the book deal news. When my agent said, “You’re going to be a published author,” I cried so hard that she was like, “Ok, now, pull yourself together.” It took me twelve years, seven books, and 300 rejection letters to get to that point, so there was a lot of emotional build-up. Unboxing my ARCs. The first time I saw FLASHFALL in book form was surreal. I had spent so long writing and revising the manuscript, and suddenly it was A REAL LIVE BOOK. I think that’s the moment I really began to feel like an author. Filming the book trailer. We headed into caves to shoot it and to a sand quarry for the cordon scenes. I loved seeing the actors dressed in Subpar caver’s suits and armor, saying lines from my book! It was awesome seeing my characters come to life like that. Seeing my book in a store for the first time. I just stopped and stared at my book sitting up there on a shelf in Barnes & Noble. Utterly surreal. I had stood in that spot so many times and just dreamed of this moment. Now, here it was. Dream. Come. True. I tried to hide the fact that I was crying. I still get emotional when I see my novels on a bookstore shelf.
Favorite songs from my FLASHTIDE playlist:
“Torches” by X Ambassadors “Rise” by Katy Perry “What You Wanted” by OneRepublic “Breathe Me” by Sia “Say Something” by A Great Big World
