Mitali Perkins Answers: Why is NaNoWriMo Important to You?

November is National Novel Writing Month! ????

As lovers of books and those who write them, NaNoWriMo is an incredibly important event for us. And to celebrate the month (and everyone toiling away on their latest manuscript), we've asked four Fierce authors who ALSO happen to be members of the NaNoWriMo writers board to answer one very important question for us: Why is NaNoWriMo important to you?

So, without further ado, here's why NaNoWriMo is important to MITALI PERKINS!

"Why do I try to write a novel in 30 days every year? Three reasons:

1. The ticking clock. Every writer knows that a deadline amps up the action in a story. November 30th looms ahead. Will the writer pull us through an inciting incident, compose a climactic scene, and carry us to a satisfying resolution before the ides of December? Only time will tell. Go, writer, go.

2. The community. There's nothing like common travail to build friendships. The whines, the groans, the shared self-hatred — wrestling our muses side-by-side for a month builds bonds. "Right?" "Me, too!" "YES! Exactly!" "I CAN'T DO THIS!" "Get a grip, girl, we've GOT THIS!" And so on.

3. The product. It might suck. No, it will suck. But it will be done: a finished first draft. And next comes the part of this job I like best: revision. No more blank page. Now it has words all over it. Stupid, boring sentences that read like cacophony at first but as we hone and choreograph and compose them into order, they might slowly sing their way into a better story.

Why not join the rest of us in the agony and ecstasy that is NaNoWriMo? You won't regret it."
