A Haunting Interview with Sara Faring, Author of The Tenth Girl

Okay. We’re just going to say it:

The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring is the most haunting book we’ve read in AGES.

It’s the perfect book to add to the top of your TBR during the spookiest month of the year, so don’t sleep on this! And, in case you need some extra incentive or proof-of-scary, check out our interview with the author herself.

What makes Mavi Fierce?

To quote Mavi: "What to do when darkness overwhelms? That is one thing all of those I've loved would have agreed upon: We must gather up our strength and fight together toward the narrowing light."

What inspired you to write The Tenth Girl?

My Argentine grandmother’s darkly magical stories, always shared late at night, under an amber moon.

What's the spookiest thing you learned while researching The Tenth Girl?

I visited the spooky mausoleum of Felicitas Guerrero in the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires and learned her story (which has inspired countless Argentine writers). Felicitas was a famous heiress in 19th century Buenos Aires who was cornered by a jilted lover who gave her a horrific ultimatum: marry me or marry no one. When she tried to escape, he murdered her. Some say her spirit still roams . . .

What's your favorite Halloween tradition?

Cutting into pumpkins to make jack-o'-lanterns and then roasting the seeds with sugar and salt, and baking the extra pumpkin meat into cinnamon-dusted pie!

What's your favorite spooky story?

The girl with the green velvet ribbon around her neck! I wrote about it (and twists) here

What are your go-to movies for a Halloween movie marathon?

Everything Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride) . . . and I will probably sneak in The Babadook.

Describe your book in 3 words

Mind-bending, luminous, and bone-chilling.

The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring

Simmering in Patagonian myth, The Tenth Girl is a gothic psychological thriller with a haunting twist.

At the very southern tip of South America looms an isolated finishing school. Legend has it that the land will curse those who settle there. But for Mavi—a bold Buenos Aires native fleeing the military regime that took her mother—it offers an escape to a new life as a young teacher to Argentina’s elite girls.

Mavi tries to embrace the strangeness of the imposing house—despite warnings not to roam at night, threats from an enigmatic young man, and rumors of mysterious Others. But one of Mavi’s ten students is missing, and when students and teachers alike begin to behave as if possessed, the forces haunting this unholy cliff will no longer be ignored.

One of these spirits holds a secret that could unravel Mavi's existence. In order to survive she must solve a cosmic mystery—and then fight for her life.
