An Interview with June Hur, Author of The Silence of Bones

If you're a fan of dark and mysterious historical fiction, we have some truly excellent news for you: The Silence of Bones has arrived! June Hur's elegant and haunting debut novel is a bloody tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Want to learn more about this incredible new novel? Keep reading to hear from the author herself!

What makes Seol fierce?

Seol's kindness makes her fierce! To Seol, kindness means to consider the good of others. And sometimes doing what is best for others is the hardest thing, sometimes harder than, for example, wielding a sword against one’s enemy. It is this type of kindness, loving and gritty, difficult and sacrificial, that drives Seol to commit an act of kindness that seems almost cruel.

What's the most interesting thing you learned while researching The Silence of Bones?

While I was researching historical Korea, I came across a group of women called ‘damo.’ These women were servants who worked for the police bureau, and they were in charge of serving tea — and dealing with female victims, culprits, and corpses. They were, apparently, the first female police force in world history to have arresting power! I was so intrigued by them that I made my heroine a damo.

What's one fun fact most people don't know about you?

I once wanted to be a manga artist, so I’d draw and write out stories and make it look like a manga book for my sister to read. She devoured everything I drew/wrote for her.

What's your favorite part of being an author?

Interacting with readers!

What's the most challenging part of being an author?

Trying to meet all my deadlines while caring for a one-year-old baby.

How would you describe your book in 3 words?

Rain. Mountains. Revenge.

The Silence of Bones by June Hur

I have a mouth, but I mustn't speak;

Ears, but I mustn't hear;

Eyes, but I mustn't see.

1800, Joseon (Korea). Homesick and orphaned sixteen-year-old Seol is living out the ancient curse: “May you live in interesting times.” Indentured to the police bureau, she’s been tasked with assisting a well-respected young inspector with the investigation into the politically charged murder of a noblewoman.

As they delve deeper into the dead woman's secrets, Seol forms an unlikely bond of friendship with the inspector. But her loyalty is tested when he becomes the prime suspect, and Seol may be the only one capable of discovering what truly happened on the night of the murder.

But in a land where silence and obedience are valued above all else, curiosity can be deadly.
