Which Death Prefers Blondes Drag Queen Are You?

Which Death Prefers Blondes Drag Queen Are You?

To celebrate Death Prefers Blondes, the latest YA mystery from Caleb Roehrig, we asked Caleb to take a stab at recreating the stars of the novel: A band of jewel-thieving drag queens! He did an amazing job (obviously), and using his looks, we created a quiz to help you discover which drag queen you are. Read on to hear from the author and to take the quiz!

Drag is a transformative and transgressive art. For many men, it offers a chance to fully embrace one’s feminine aspects, to exaggerate them, play with them, and enjoy them in a way that society still tries to tell us is wrong. Drag is about self-expression, and conquering ingrained negativity. It is also hard to do.

In seeking to create five distinct looks for the five queens who appear in my new novel, Death Prefers Blondes, I found myself quickly overwhelmed. And so I present these images with three important disclaimers: 1) I am not an experienced drag queen, 2) I am definitely not a makeup artist, and 3) liquid eyeliner is the actual devil. I learned on the go and made a lot of mistakes, some of which are…evident, but I hope that you appreciate the effort! Henceforth and therewith, take the quiz here, and read about all the possible results (and lewks) below:

Possible results:

Anita Stiffwon (aka Joaquin Moreau): Anita is the youngest member of the team, and also the newest recruit. A skilled acrobat adept in the art of infiltration, she has the most to prove, and also is a little smitten with one of the other girls. Inspired by the mod sixties, I gave her a dropped waterline to exaggerate the eyes, and painted in the lower lashes, Twiggy-style. Her signature color is green, so I made the lid a yellow-green gradient, and was generous with the blush for that rosy touch of youth.

Electra Shoxx (aka Leif Dalby): Trained in ballet and capoeira, Electra’s major strength is hand-to-hand combat. She’s the least likely to get ruffled during a job, but the reason she joined up with Margo and the other girls has her under constant stress. Her signature color is violet, and her aesthetic is “femme fatale of the silent screen,” so her lid is a spotlight cut-crease in purple tones as a tribute to her cinematic inspiration. With Greta Garbo in mind, I also gave her a pale foundation, slender brows, spiky lashes, and a very luscious lip.

Dior Galore (aka Davon Stokes): Dior is the team’s gearhead and wheel-woman, a mechanic and combat aficionado who can boost a high-end car and do backflips in four-inch heels. A hard-shelled cynic with a gooey center, Dior has seen her fair share of hardship, but is also the heart of the team. Her signature color is blue, and this 80s-inspired cotton candy fantasy captures both her fierce and sweet sides. This sapphire smoky eye with a vibrant pink cut-crease was probably my favorite look to do (although I wish I’d overdrawn the lip just a touch more!)

Liesl Von Tramp (aka Axel Moreau): A sharpshooter with a chip on her shoulder, Liesl is stubborn, loyal, and flirtatious. She’s been part of the team since the very beginning, and her reasons for staying in the game—even when it gets deadly—are deeply personal. Her signature color is red, so I gave her a look that would showcase a vivid lip. Her upper lid is silver glitter, which unfortunately doesn’t quite translate in the pictures, but I’m thrilled that the shimmering powder I used for her highlighter means she is serving Beverly Hills Housewives realness.

Miss Anthropy (aka Margo Manning): Exacting and precise, Margo is not just a member of the team—she’s also the leader. And the only girl. Despite being an heiress and socialite by day, she has plenty of reasons for committing cat burglaries by night. Her Black Swan lewk, with a matte red lip and a dramatic, black-and-white winged eye—was partly inspired by the mask on the book’s cover!

Death Prefers Blondes by Caleb Roehrig

Teenage socialite Margo Manning leads a dangerous double life. By day, she dodges the paparazzi while soaking up California sunshine. By night, however, she dodges security cameras and armed guards, pulling off high-stakes cat burglaries with a team of flamboyant young men. In and out of disguise, she’s in all the headlines.

But then Margo’s personal life takes a sudden, dark turn, and a job to end all jobs lands her crew in deadly peril. Overnight, everything she’s ever counted on is put at risk. Backs against the wall, the resourceful thieves must draw on their special skills to survive. But can one rebel heiress and four kickboxing drag queens withstand the slings and arrows of truly outrageous fortune? Or will a mounting sea of troubles end them — for good?
